Jamaica is a small island situated near South America. Most of its population consists of S Africans who were taken as slaves by the Europeans long back. These South Africans have settled there for generations. The Europeans include, German, Spanish, Irish, English and Scottish. The population includes others like Asians, Syrians etc, who are minority. Most of them are S Africans. Some of the slaves ran away from here and are called maroons. They have their own tradition.
Most of the Jamaicans speak English which is their national language. Some of them speak a combination of Spanish, German, Irish and Scottish known as patois. Jamaicans have passion for sports, like cricket, soccer, polo etc. They are very friendly type of people
The Jamaicans being traditionally South Africans prefer to cover their legs so they wear long robes with a hat. They eat fresh fish. Their traditions food is ackkai. Most of them prefer to be vegetarians. They love eating vegetarian food. They usually have the habit of carrying their shopping things in two baskets hanged on either side of a pole and holding the pole in the head. They buy the fruits and vegetables they need fresh from the market rather than in super stores. Since it is an Island they get fresh fish in the market place. Fresh fishes are soft and tasty to eat.
Most of them are highly religious. There are quite a number of churches in the small Island. Since they come from different parts one good see congregation of Roman Catholics, Baptists, Anglicans and Jehovah’s. They are highly religious and follow the different rituals according to the religion they follow.
They are highly talented people especially in sports and music. They are familiar in Reggae music. The Internationally famous singer Bob Marley is a Jamaican. Other famous singers from Jamaica are Sly Dunbar, Shabba Ranks Black Uhuru and Robby Shakespeare won Gammy Awards in Reggae category.
Since they Jamaicans come from different countries they have a mixture of all the cultures. And the language is also a mixture of all the languages. They themselves laugh at each others and have fun making fun of the others. Since they have lived there for generations they don’t have any racial discrimination. Most of them are S Africans. Although the first generation were not educated and came to work there as slaves now they have become well educated and are in high posts and work in all big government offices. Being minority the other country people don’t have a say. They all mingle with each other as one country men. Jamaicans have now spread all over the world and work in different parts of the world.
